After long anticipation, the baseball and softball fields are being renovated while a new synthetic playing field is being created. The new synthetic field will have soccer and lacrosse lines and will be available for use by all PE classes. The softball and baseball fields are being renovated so both fields are more playable. The synthetic playing field should be finished late January and the baseball and softball fields will be finished some time mid-February, according to athletic director Tom Salter.
Currently all the grass on the baseball field, as well as the softball field, has been completely dug up. “Now they are leveling the [baseball] field so that it is very very playable,” varsity baseball coach Rick Prieto said. Both fields will be re-sodded and additional batting cages will be inserted. The softball field is also getting infield gates, perimeter fences and a new scoreboard.
Sport teams have not had access to the fields where they normally play. “[The remodeling] has put a couple of hurdles into our normality we’ve had,” Prieto said. Usually baseball practice would be held at school everyday from 2 to 5 on the field but because of the renovating the practice routine has been changed. On Mondays and Fridays they practice outside of school and the rest of the week they work on conditioning on campus.
Overall, both players and coaches are very appreciative that the baseball field is being renovated and are looking forward to the completion. Though many coaches and players have had to adjust their practices, they are okay with the sacrifices they must make to get a new and improved playing field. “I think that [the renovation] will give us more motivation,” varsity baseball catcher Price Campbell said.
