You might have heard about the winter formal that was scheduled to happen February 23rd.
The Fire and Ice dance was ASB’s follow-up to Homecoming. It was a first time event, though planned to be a similar dance to last year’s glow-themed winter semi-formal. The dance seemed like a promising event, one that some of my friends and I were excited to attend. However, last week it was announced that the dance was cancelled. The now pressing question is: why? What shot down a seemingly fun night before it even took off? ASB says it was simply a lack of support and spirit from the students.
After the record high sales for the homecoming dance, it seemed like the school was ready for another dance. ASB talked to students before winter break and they said they wanted another dance, similar to Homecoming. So ASB worked hard to put together and promote the Fire and Ice dance, a semi-formal with orange and blue theme colors. There was hope that there would be excitement following the hype of homecoming.
Yet the low ticket sales proved otherwise. Falon Legaux, ASB president, said that the student-run organization put in much time and effort in trying to create hype for the dance. Individual students went to classes, posters were made, and ticket prices were kept low. They were excited to put on the dance, especially considering the reception of Homecoming. They projected a high turnout based on a survey they did after homecoming that said most students would attend another dance. Yet even after the dance was put together and announced, there still just weren’t enough ticket sales to fill the auditorium.
This again begs the question: why the low turnout? What made students so excited to attend the the homecoming dance but not the semi-formal? School dances aren’t for everyone, but the Fire and Ice Dance seemed like a great opportunity for those who are.
Maybe it was the timing. Maybe it was the cold. Maybe, students just collectively changed their mind about wanting a dance. Hopefully, next time students will show more enthusiasm for school events.
