“11th show on the 11th day of the 11th month.”
26-year-old emerging musician, Mark Ambor, livened El Rey Theatre with a performance that left long awaited fans with an unforgettable night. His highly anticipated Rockwood Tour was nothing short of successful.
Born and raised in Pleasantville, his inspiration for the album Rockwood, Ambor grew up surrounded by music, learning to play guitar at a young age. After moving to the city to pursue his dreams, he released his debut EP Hello World, which garnered attention for its emotional depth and catchy hooks. His soulful pop sound quickly resonated with listeners, and within months, he amassed millions of monthly listeners. His breakout hit, “Belong Together,” now sits at the Top 40 of the Billboard Global 200, with over 350 million streams and nearly 5 million daily plays.
The evening began with a performance from artist, Kenize, teasing her most recent album Biting My Tongue. She captured the attention of the audience with her viral song, “Anatomy”, as it resonates with many people. Kenzie mentioned how she grew up in a single parent household so this is a song to her absent father. While her performance was impressive, it was clear that all eyes were on the headline act.
As the lights dimmed and the familiar riff of “I Hope it All Works Out” echoed through the arena, the crowd erupted. The stage, decorated to give a homey feeling, was bathed in red, gold and blue lights. The deliberate touches, a record player with the Rockwood emblem, a shirt with “My Love!” written on it, and the stuffed frog that was given to Ambor by a fan, added to the intimate feeling.
The night flew by with many songs from the Rockwood album being played with his old stuff sprinkled in. One of the highlights was Ambor coming into the middle of the crowd to play “Hate that I Still Love You”. Without the reach of a speaker, he asked the crowd to sing along with him. This already emotional, heartfelt song was made more personal by the addition of every audience member’s voice.
As expected, the encore was a crowd-pleaser, with everyone singing at the top of their lungs. Ambor addressed the audience, sharing a heartfelt thanks for the fans’ unwavering support before jumping into the hit “Belong Together”; it served as an ode to his heartening and uplifting tour. At the end of the night, as the house lights flickered off and fans filed out of the theater, it was clear that Mark Ambor was solidifying himself as one of the most exciting young artists in pop music today.
Ambor will continue his Rockwood Tour until May 15th 2025. More information can be found at markambor.com.
