The Absence of Competition

As Culver High students walked to the voting tables earlier this March to vote for next year’s student government leaders, they were faced with a fairly easy choice. For almost every student government position, students only had one box to check. The positions for next year lacked competition as most of the candidates were running unopposed. Gone were the healthy rivalries, intense campaigning, and the competitive vibe of the election. With an exception of the Commissioner of Athletics position, Junior Class President and Vice President position, and Sophomore Class President and Vice President position, all other eight positions had no opponents and their respectable candidates easily secured their win.

Generally, ASB receives an overwhelming amount of candidates running opposed for multiple positions and the election races leave the students in excitement and anticipation. Candidates who run for a student government positions and win, automatically receive a spot in Dr. Valverde’s fourth period ASB class. Throughout the last couple of years, this has been an incentive for many people to run for these student government position since the application process to be a standard ASB member is highly competitive. What calls for this lack of student interest and activism towards these leadership position is still an unanswered question. As much as this year’s positions lacked interest among the student population, the current elected leaders embody a school spirit and an aspiration for student involvement so highly that they show potential to bring back the healthy competition and drive for student activism next school year.

Currently elected as the ASB President and ASB Vice President, Falon Lagaux and Andrea are the fresh faces of leadership for next year. Legaux and Pastor, both currently juniors, have been a part of ASB for the past couple of years and have dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort towards student run activities, pep rallies, fundraisers, and much more. Legaux has been class President for the past three years in addition to playing on the Girls Softball team while Pastor is currently one of the Special Events Coordinator in ASb as well as being a member of AVPA Theatre. Both girls hope to bring a new perspective and burst of energy to the ASB next year as well as making sure that the next school year is full of school spirit and student collaboration.
