The Popular Lip Dub Returns For Year Two

The Lip Dub is soon returning for its second year at CCHS. Students still have the opportunity to showcase their passions in a piece of Culver City history through this Associated Student Body (ASB) event.

A lip dub is a music video that combines lipsyncing and audio dubbing, produced in one continuous, unedited shot. ASB chooses the many popular songs played in snippets throughout the video.

Last year, students from a variety of clubs, associations, sports teams, and other groups came together to film a long video of lipsyncing, dancing, and togetherness. This year it returns with the same purpose, to showcase the school's enthusiasm for diverse kinds of activities.

It all began last year with the decision of former ASB president Kalia Lowitz, and the lip dub now returns due to its tremendous popularity. Reflecting on last year’s process, ASB Director of Student Activities of 23 years, Dr. Carlos Valverde hopes to further creatively challenge the groups participating in the event, encouraging students to show their Culver Pride through dress and attitude, displaying a lively side of CCHS. This can be channeled through fun costumes, props, face paint, vibrant clothing, signage, and any other school appropriate items.

Posted on the public Culver City High School Instagram, the video is meant to bring happiness to the students and the community. “People loved it… It creates a lot of joy, and people smile when they watch it. People thought ‘what a great activity’. It says something about our high school,” says Dr. Valverde.

The Lip Dub “helps challenge and breaks through some of those ideas that people might have about what our school is like” states Dr. Valverde.

For participating students, Dr. Valverde feels the video serves as a souvenir, a memory marker for that year. The video acts as a time capsule by preserving the popular music of that year, while presenting the current school population representing their most loved activities.

The process of creating such an event has stages. First, a club or person proposes the idea in ASB, submitting an activity request form. Then, it goes through the ASB student council for discussion. After council approval, Dr. Valverde approves it, and then it is sent to the administration for a final decision. Once the administrators approve it, then production planning begins.

The date of this year’s recording has been pushed back, now scheduled to take place April 29th during CP Flex. For participating groups, the rehearsal is mandatory the week prior, April 22nd during CP Flex. The event remains open now for sign ups, and all participation is appreciated. Updates on dates will be posted on the school website followed later by the finished video.
