Boys Volleyball Team Wins 1st Ever CIFSS Title
The CCHS Varsity Boys Volleyball team celebrates their win.
Culver City High School Volleyball had a phenomenal 2026 season that concluded with them winning the CIF Southern Section Division 6 Championship. The Centaurs finished with an overall 18 wins and 7 losses, including tournament games. In the regular season they went 6-2 in the Ocean league, earning them 2nd place after a crucial win over Inglewood High School; three sets to zero. The team also made it to the DaVinci High School tournament gold semifinals before suffering defeat to South Pasadena.
A big part of this team's success has come from sophomore Keanu Atianzar, with 503 digs this season placing him in 12th in all of California and 20th in the United States in season digs. Another interesting stat from this season is the team's impressive 87.6% serving percentage in league play which is over 17% higher than the national average.
CCHS was near the top of the standings for most of their season: they had the top 3 kill leaders in the Ocean League with Sophomore Mason Boyd’s 215 kills, Sophomore Ken Hasegawa’s 188 kills, and Sophomore Sterling Gregory’s 107 kills. Culver also had the league's assist leader with Senior Casey Brennan's 579 assists. Mason Boyd also led the league in total blocks, with 76. Additionally, during league play, the team averaged 6.8 blocks per game and a 0.172 hitting percentage. Hasegawa was also a gamechanger with his 59 serving aces, the most in the Ocean League.
After the league season concluded, the team qualified for CIF Southern Section Division 6 Playoffs. Their first playoff game was at home against Ramona High School where they exceeded very high expectations and won 3-0. They then won two consecutive away games at El Modena where they won 3-2 and at Firebaugh where they won 3-1. These wins built momentum that they carried throughout the rest of the playoffs and that was clearly showcased when they returned home to play Temecula Valley for a spot in the championship game. Mason Boyd and Ken Hasegawa’s 20 combined kills led the team to win that game 3-1 to book their spot in the championship against Garden Grove High School.
The final game was held at Cerritos College and was going back and forth with Culver City narrowly winning the first 2 sets. Then, Garden Grove tied the game at 2-2 to send it to a 5th set where the Centaurs prevailed, winning the set 15-9 to take down the Garden Grove Argonauts. This win sent the team to the Division 3 CIF State Championships where they faced Bonita Vista in San Diego on May 19 in the first round where they were eliminated. This season will be recognized as one of the best in program history and will always be remembered for winning the first ever championship for our school.
