This year, on October 5th, the Art Walk was hosted in the Culver City Arts District. AVPA students and small businesses showcase and sell art, clothing, and more. Washington Boulevard is closed down, and is lined with booths, food trucks, and live music. The Culver City community gathers together to enjoy the lively event.
At the art walk, AVPA Art students have the opportunity to sell and showcase their artwork. Art walk attendees can browse artwork, take small art workshops, and watch AVPA students create art live. As an important part of the school and community, AVPA Art provides a space for creativity. Serena Fisch, a sophomore in AVPA art, describes AVPA as “a home, a safe space, and a place where I get to just practice my art.”
Along with AVPA, the Art Walk also consists of many small business pop-ups including The Sunny Studio and Cast & Clover. The Sunny Studio is owned by Christina. She creates and sells handmade ceramics, such as vases, dinner ware, and fun tic-tac-toe boards, and crochet. She started off working at a ceramic studio and “got inspired by what [they] made there so as a hobby [she] sort of picked up pottery.” She also picked up crochet as a hobby when she was little because her Nana enjoyed crocheting. So, she then started her business to share her art with other people and move some of her inventory. One of Christina’s goals for The Sunny Studio is to start selling online and maybe even across the U.S.
Another interesting business at the Art walk was Maya Holland’s Cast & Clover. She has a business where she “hand forage[s] and press[es] wild flowers and turn[s] them into jewelry, accessories, and decor.” Ever since she was young she had been making jewelry, so as she got older, she wanted to keep pursuing her passion for jewelry making. She then went to college for art and studied jewelry. After that, when she was living in the mountains and as she was surrounded by wildflowers, she was very interested in them and wanted to see what she could “forage, press, and preserve.” So, she taught herself how to do all of this, and then her business began. Her goals for her business are to sell in more in person stores and boutiques and to begin silversmithing so she can hand craft the metals for her jewelry. As an annual event, the Art Walk grows every year, becoming an important community tradition. Families can gather, see art, and overall have a great time. Each year, new businesses and students add their artistic talents to the mix and create a fresh feel. If you didn’t go this year, make sure to check it out next time.
