Culver City High School’s first-ever annual Mind Madness, an exciting and challenging trivia competition introduced by math teacher and coach Henry Lutz, is set to take place this March. The opening rounds will run from March 4-6 in teachers’ classrooms during lunch, with the final showdown between the top two teams happening in the Robert Frost Auditorium during CP Flex on March 12.
Twelve teams will be competing: The Almunds, Bota4life, Candy Corn, The Chemeleons, The Dream Team, No Fear Household, Oreo, Rice, Team Unlawful, The Three Laughing Llamas, The Triple Threat, and Wise Girls.
Questions will cover core high school subjects like math, science, and English, plus topics that dive into sports, pop culture, CCHS trivia, and geography. Each question was crafted at a level a 9th grader can handle, and every category features at least 100 questions.
Two lightning rounds will amp up the intensity, giving teams 60 seconds to answer, and they’ll know the category a minute before the question is asked. Then, they’ll wager the number of points they want to risk, have 30 seconds to discuss, and write down their answer. Correct answers score the wagered points, while incorrect ones result in a loss of those points. The teams with the highest scores will move on to the next round!
As the teams face off, each will be given a white or blue flag. When a question is read, the first team to raise their flag gets the chance to answer. A correct answer earns them a point, but an incorrect answer costs them a point and hands the opportunity to the opposing team.
Coach Lutz expects “Mind Madness to be great!” While the prizes are still under wraps, they’re sure to be worth competing for!
