The first annual Mind Madness student trivia competition culminated in a thrilling final round held on March 12 in the Robert Frost Auditorium during the school day, with hundreds of students in attendance. The top two teams battled it out as Principal Dr. Adrienne Thomas read the questions, while members of the Associated Student Body (ASB) emceed and kept score.
After nine intense rounds, the contest reached its climax with the final question in the Science category: “What is the only letter that does not appear on the Periodic Table of Elements?”
Team Wise Girls, composed of Flora Woo, Nava Waisman, and Natalie Cayetano, answered correctly with “J”, defeating Team Candy Corn consisting of Leo Marcus, James Cole, and Clark Erekson, who answered “Q.” Wise Girls had wagered all their points, while Candy Corn bet 14 points. The answer “Q” was determined incorrect due to the existence of the element Ununquadium (a temporary name for element 114).
Mind Madness was brought to CCHS by math teacher and track coach Henry Lutz and proved to be a huge success. Twelve teams competed, progressing through multiple rounds until only two remained. Categories included Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Pop Culture, Sports, Geography, and CCHS Trivia.
The Pop Culture category included questions like: “What are the five emotions in Riley’s head in the Pixar movie Inside Out?” (Answer: Anger, Sadness, Joy, Fear, and Disgust) while the Social Studies category included questions like: “What ancient civilization created the idea of the wheel?” (Answer: Ancient Mesopotamians).
The event’s success was made possible by the hard work of ASB students and teachers. ASB member Khalen Loredo, who helped organize the competition, said, “It was really fun to organize, and I’m glad so many people enjoyed it as much as I did.”
With its exciting finale and enthusiastic participation, Mind Madness has set the stage for a new CCHS tradition that students are already looking forward to next year!
