With the end of the year drawing nearer and nearer, activities for the graduating class of 2025 are popping up. Examples of these events include Senior Assassin, a game unaffiliated with the school but still very popular, Grad Nite, Prom, Senior Week, and of course Graduation.
Senior Assassin is a modern tradition, gaining popularity over the past several years, which involves students using water guns to eliminate fellow seniors until reaching the last one standing. While being a popular tradition for high school students, it commonly gets controversial. This year, as in the past, has an Instagram account (@culver_seniorassassins) which explains the rules and boundaries for CCHS.
According to the account, teens should not use a water gun or fake weapon that resembles a real gun. Last year’s Senior Assassin game at CCHS involved students using realistic water guns, which led to a controversial shut down of the game. The Instagram account put additional emphasis on not bringing water guns to campus at all, even unrealistic ones. Rules also include, preventing players from eliminating within the school and a 2-block radius from campus.
On April 13th, CCHS administration sent out a newsletter regarding the game, explaining its dangers and the disruptions it has caused in the neighborhood. The email encourages students to stay educated about the risks associated with carrying toy guns which resemble true firearms. Like the Instagram account, CCHS administration similarly warns students not to bring such water guns to school.
“Its popularity has grown so much that local law enforcement agencies across the country have issued warnings. The concerns primarily involve the risks associated with the use of realistic-looking water guns and the danger of students sneaking up on others,” writes CCHS administration.
The newsletter also states the concerns of Culver City residents who have written emails to the school.
“Why on God’s green earth do they [kids] think it’s okay to be dressed in all black, running around with guns – regardless of whether they are real or fake – and targeting each other?” says one resident.
“I witnessed students zooming down the street in a chase trying [to] shoot each other car to car?” claims another.
CCHS administration did not go so far as to shut down the game for this year; the scope of the message was to set better boundaries for following years to keep up the tradition in the safest manner possible.
Unlike Senior Assassin which is unaffiliated with the school, CCHS has posted a Senior Newsletter (https://secure.smore.com/n/sr6h3) which holds information on official events for seniors.
Grad Nite, a highly awaited day for all high school students, will be held at Universal Studios this year, on Friday, June 6th from 2PM to 2AM. This trip is limited for all seniors in good standing. To be admitted, a contract must be signed by parents and students promising good behavior. The transport to and from the event will be provided by the school.
Prom, another exciting event for both Seniors and Juniors, will be held at the Petersen Automobile Museum, with the theme being Glitz and Gears, in a nod to the theme of the museum. The color pallette focuses on red shades, gold and silver details, with black as well. The event will last from 7PM to 11PM and will be held on May 17th.
Senior Week, a week of preparation for graduating seniors, spans from June 9th to 13th, which is graduation day of class of 2025. On Wednesday of that week is Senior Breakfast, Skate Party, and Yearbook Signing. Also on that day, tickets will be given out for guests at graduation, each senior receiving 4. Outside of these 4, each ticket will cost $25. Tickets will not be sold at the event gate.
With the year coming to a close, it will be sad to see our seniors go, but there are a variety of fun activities and traditions that they will get to experience before graduation.
