The Black Student Union put on the first annual SNKR Ball, a night filled with music, dancing, and a celebration of sneaker culture.
Held on April 19 the event took place on the lunch patio and drew a crowd of over 100 sneaker enthusiasts.
Attendees showed off their most stylish kicks from Jordans to Big Red Boots on the dance floor.
BSU partnered with Sally Ghattas, a CCHS alumna, mother and devoted community member to bring NEEKO the founder and spokesperson for the non profit organization Education is Key, which promotes the importance of education and raises money for scholarships for inner city students of Los Angeles.
ProjectPit, another community based organization which promotes mental health awareness in Los Angeles communities participated as well.
“These organizations helped bring the fire that was needed to make the SNKR Ball as successful as it was,” BSU President Anna White said.
There was a shoe competition, where participants flaunted their rarest and most unique sneakers for a chance to win gift certificates.
The DJ booth played a wide variety of music that kept everyone on the dance floor. Even school administrators could be seen “movin’ and groovin’” in the background.
Photo opportunities were abundant throughout the night, with a spinning GoPro photo booth. Students stood on a platform and shot bubbles from a bubble gun to create unique photos.
The SNKR Ball was originally scheduled for March 1. Due to an overwhelming interest in the event and recent collaboration and partnerships with new organizations, businesses, and collaborators, BSU needed to move the dance to April 19 to allow more students to participate in the event.
“BSU can’t wait to continue this tradition next year!” White said. “Who knows, hopefully this opens more doors for more club-lead events at Culver City High.”
