Last month, the after school library hours were extended for one hour to give students a longer time to study. Previously, the library closed at 4 p.m., but as a result of an ASB-inspired initiative, the time was extended to 5 p.m.
Many people seek a safe place to study or do homework after school, or even to wait for a club meeting or sports practice to start, so the extended hours of the library created a quiet and safe setting where students can focus on homework.
Senior Aaliyah Wilson has dance practice at 4:15 p.m.and sometimes not until 5:15 p.m., so she would often linger around the campus after the library closed until her practice started. “I’m now able to do homework and study after school while waiting for my dance practice to start,” Wilson said at the time.
ASB Vice President Natalia Saucedo, who acts as the “eyes and ears” of the campus for the Culver City school board, noticed people’s struggle to find a safe study environment after school. She took action right away and convinced the school board for a three-week trial period of extended hours from Dec. 1 to Dec. 18. “So far it’s been successful and the library has been busier than usual,” Saucedo said back in December.
School librarian, Gary Goodwin said, “Each faculty member has volunteered to take different shifts after school.” He claimed that the library was “filled up” everyday after school.
Due to the positive response to the extension of the library hours, ASB and the school board are considering lengthening the hours in the future.
